Research projects that turn ocean love into action.

Beach Cleans

Hands-on clean-ups focused on removing marine debris before it reaches the ocean. Each clean records what we find, where it came from, and how much is removed — turning a simple beach clean into meaningful data that helps track pollution patterns and inform better solutions.

Shells & Stories

WHITSUNDAYS TURTLE ID PROJECT

The Shells & Stories Turtle ID Project uses photo-identification to track individual sea turtles through their unique facial markings. First-time sightings allow the contributor to name the turtle, while repeat records build long-term data on movement, site fidelity, and population presence to support conservation and management.

Adopt a Coral

The Adopt a Coral program supports long-term coral monitoring by tracking individual coral colonies over time. Participants receive quarterly updates on their chosen coral, while repeat observations document growth, bleaching, disease, and recovery, contributing to reef health data that informs conservation and management efforts.

Research beyond our own projects

Clear Tides works with established reef and ocean monitoring programs to support broader conservation efforts beyond our own research.

  • Tangaroa Blue – collecting and submitting marine debris data through structured beach clean-ups using national protocols

  • Great Reef Census – contributing reef imagery gathered during snorkelling and sailing expeditions to support large-scale coral health assessments

  • Eye on the Reef – logging opportunistic wildlife and reef health observations to expand monitoring coverage

  • CoralWatch – assisting coral colour and bleaching monitoring using established CoralWatch methodologies

Get Involved

You don’t need to be a scientist to contribute to reef research. Clear Tides offers simple, meaningful ways for ocean lovers to get involved in monitoring and conservation

—whether you’re on the water, in the water, or supporting from shore.
